Let’s make this the Best Year Ever! But HOW? I use the Ziglar Wheel of Life from his Book Born to Win. The Wheel of Life has 7 life spokes to balance the parts of your life. If one spoke of your wheel is out of balance, your wheel won’t turn very well.
Rank yourself on each spoke on a scale of 1-10. You can quickly see what parts of your life you need to focus on.
Here are the 7 spokes:
Spiritual (God first, of course)
What does each spoke mean?
The Spiritual spoke focuses on your relationship with God. Meditation, prayer, Bible study, whatever it means to you to improve your spiritual walk.
The Career spoke encompasses all of the aspects of your work – your job, your profession, your career goals, professional development. Are you where you want to be with your career? If not where do you want to be? Are you doing what gives you fulfillment? Are you balanced on this spoke or does it need work?
The personal spoke can be a little confusing. I think of it as personal relationships – relationships that are not your family and not part of your career/work. The relationships with your friends, your network of people, social relationships. Maybe you would like to expand your network of friends and acquaintances. Maybe you want to dive deeper with certain friends.
The next spoke is physical – fitness, health, nutrition, all parts of your physical wellbeing. Are you moving? Are you eating healthy? Is there a part of your physical health that needs work?
The family spoke involves all parts of your relationships with your family members. Is your marriage healthy? What about your relationship with your kids – is that where you want it to be? Do you have a good, positive relationship with your extended family?
The mental spoke considers your personal mental health. When I think of this spoke, I think about the State Fair of Texas that happens here in Dallas every Fall. Most of the schools around here have a day off from school for “Fair Day”. To me, that’s what mental spoke is… mental health… like a Fair Day. Set aside the other spokes for a few minutes and just do something FUN! Relieve stress, play, laugh.
The financial spoke involves all things money. Money is important, but remember that it isn’t the only important thing. Money is the same importance on the wheel of life as the other 6 spokes. So, be careful not to over prioritize money. But also don’t ignore it. Do you have your emergency fund? Do you have a retirement account? Are your credit cards and other debts under control?
What parts of the Wheel of Life are you going to focus on in 2018? For me, I am focusing on mental, physical, and financial. Remember that you can’t totally crater the other spokes. You have to keep balance on the ones you are strong in and improve on the ones that need that. The idea is to bring them all up to balance, and then to elevate them all.
